Welcome back to Fitopedia: fitness terms explained. This week, Nicola Addison, personal trainer of Eqvvs training who trains models Elle Macpherson, Daisy Lowe and Erin O’Connor explains five ?weightlifting terms every girl who lifts needs?
Weight lifting equipment can feel quite alien if it’s new to you but it’s important to understand what everything does so you can get the most out of your workout while staying safe.
The cage is a metallic structure used for upper, lower and full body exercises.
The hooks are located inside the cage, either side. Their job is to hold the bar in place before and after each exercise and the height can be adjusted depending on the exercise.
These are also located either side. If the exercise can’t be completed and the weights are dropped the grippers will be there to catch your bar and protect you from any harm.
4. Weight plates
These are the actual weights you will be placing on to your bar. These will be labelled as kg or lbs depending on where you workout.
Grips are what hold your weight plates in place on your bar so that they won’t go sliding off and landing on your feet.
